Akai 4400 “Convert-A-Deck” 7” Reel to Reel Stereo Player/Recorder - Early 70’s, clean, includes Akai-branded plastic take-up reel.
Needs some minor repairs, hence the lower price.
Cosmetically quite good.
The “Convert-A-Deck” functions both as a good addition to a component system, as well as a self-contained tabletop unit complete with internal amplifier and speakers.
External speakers can also be connected.
I was impressed with the quality of the internal amplifier when connected to some good speakers.
There are 3 issues which shouldn’t be too difficult to repair for the right professional- the right side internal speaker does not function (though the amplifier produces power and sound on both channels with external speakers), the tape speed selector does not function (appears to be stuck on 3-3/4 ips), and the switches in the signal path (monitor switch, track selector switch) likely need replacing as it is difficult to get a constant, full signal on both channels.
Contact cleaner did not solve this issue.
I acquired these components second-hand, and I have been through them thoroughly with a good cleaning and minor repairs.
I can demonstrate functionality for you.
