I'm a teacher with a tractor.
It’s true.
I'm an actual school teacher.
We all know school teachers aren’t paid well and I get paid even less than most teachers.
But I do have this tractor … think of me as an old fat guy who wants to mow your lawn, except I have a tractor.
It’s a very special kind of tractor, one with a grapple and a backhoe and a bucket.
Oh, and I have a chainsaw I'm not afraid to use! I bought it to clear my own land because I couldn’t afford to pay someone to do it for me.
Then I had an idea.
What if I spent a few weekends a month clearing other people's lots? I could earn my tractor payments and still use the tractor to clear my land.
Now, can you rent a tractor from Home Depot? Yes you can! One that is half the size.
AND you have to pick it up, AND fuel it, AND return it, AND pay for insurance, AND you don't have a trained operator.
As one customer told me who noodled it out, "I would have futzed around with the thing all day.
You did in four hours what would have cost me twice as much, and I didn't have to do anything.
" This is the bargain I'm offering.
Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.
The jobs I’m looking for are from people just like you who bought some wooded property in the past and are finally ready to clear off the undergrowth and trees.
I've gotten some unusual request too.
One lady wanted me to dig a pond to save her chickens.
Another person needed me to help put in the pillings for a mini solar plant to live off the grid.
Yet another needed me to spread a mound of asphalt to park his RV on.
I'm exactly what I say I am: a school teacher with a very special kind of tractor, one with a grapple and a backhoe and a bucket, and a chainsaw I'm not afraid to use.
All I want to do is make my tractor payments.
I'M NOT COMMERCIAL! I only work weekends or when school is out.
I've turned down lots of jobs because I’M NOT COMMERCIAL.
Those guys can do big projects.
I don't want and can't do those jobs.
I'm just a teacher with a tractor.
You know, like the neighborhood kid who wants to mow your grass.
I don't pull permits.
I expect to be paid the day I work.
Generally, I expect you to be there because I’m there to help you, but there have been exceptions.
Here are some things you should know: • I will do whatever you want me to do with the tools I have for eight hours.
Additional hours in the same day are $88 per hour.
• Usually there is an 8 hour minimum.
If you are really close or we are finishing something we can talk about ½ days, but I only do ½ days on Sundays.
And they have to be CLOSE like Cape Coral or North Fort Myers.
I'm not driving to Lehigh for ½ a day.
• Fuel charges: It's $2 per mile to you per Google Maps.
The truck gets thirsty dragging the tractor around.
• Buried stuff I'm not responsible for: water lines like sprinklers, low voltage landscape lighting, fiber optic or DSL lines (you really should have called the number on the sign that says 'call before you dig'), or any other stuff discovered buried on your property.
If you tell me to dig, I dig.
If we find buried treasure I claim 1/4th as a finder fee.
Things you should know about ponds: I can only dig down to the table (a.
k.
a cap) rock.
I don't have a jack hammer, I have a tractor.
I can't bust through the table rock.
This might mean that I can only dig down 6".
In the pictures, I dug down 4 feet before we hit table rock.
This was a repeat customer and we dug a pilot hole before he committed.
The pond I dug for them was about 60 feet long by 30 feet wide.
It took (4) visits to dig the pond and spread out the dirt, so it cost $2800 + fuel.
This was WAY cheaper than what he was quoted, but remember it took (4) visits.
This is not going to be done in a day.
He also had me start just at the beginning of the rainy season, which is why it is full of water.
The best time to dig a pond is January - April.
Next dry season he will probably call me back to scrape it and then put in a liner.
But he was very happy with what I could do.
He had wild birds in the pond before I even finished.
PLEASE! Have your expectations in check.
I have a tractor, not an excavator or bulldozer.
Brazilian Pepper trees have shallow roots and if I can get to the central trunk, I can often pull out the whole tree in one shot.
Melaleuca and Australian pine trees can be similar, but it depends on the size.
(Doesn’t everything?) In my pictures you will see me removing some VERY big trees.
But I can’t remove all trees.
I recently had a customer who was disappointed that it took two hours to dig out a 30 foot Slash Pine (the most common pine in Florida) because the customer didn’t understand that the tap root on a Slash Pine can extend six feet into the ground or more! Some jobs require an excavator.

Removal: I don’t take away the vegetation.
I don’t have any way to do that.
90% of my customers have me pile up the refuse to let it rot.
You can’t do that in some places.
Know what the regulations are at your site! One customer of mine got into a fight with a neighbor who called the EPA.
My recommendation is to have me pile up the debris by the road and call a removal service.
Factor this into your project cost.
Sand Owls and Gopher Tortoises are protected species by the Feds.
If your property is in a Gopher Turtle area, get a permit or you might go to Fed jail.
I’m serious, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
One customer's project took 12 months to finish because it took so long to get the Gopher Tortoise permit.
Gopher Tortoise are no joke.
And I don’t go anywhere near Sand Owls.
One last time, I'M NOT COMMERCIAL! I'm warning you right now, there is nothing to sue from me.
Unless you want to assume my student loan debt, I have nothing to take.
Hell, I don't even own the tractor, the bank does.
But I would love it if you assumed my student loan debt .

What? You though I took cash to hide it? If I don't pay my taxes, who is going to pay your social security? A brief description of what you want done: If you say "clear this lot so I can build duplexes" the answer is probably no.
If you say "my husband says he is going to do X, but he is never going to do X and I'm tired of waiting!" then the answer is probably yes.
When you want to do this: I can plan out, it doesn't have to be this weekend.
Maybe it can be this weekend, but I prefer to come look at the work first, however there have been exceptions based on the satellite and what you want done.
Please don't be the jerk who had me drive all the way to LaBelle to move 4,000 cubic yards for dirt and expected to pay $400.
That's not reasonable.
